How to Create a Coloured and Textured Painting by Rosalie Taillefer-Simard
Have you ever used mediums in your paintings? They may seem daunting at first, but with tips and tricks from our DeSerres expert Rosalie Taillefer-Simard, you won’t be able to create without them. Let’s get started!

MATERIALS:

  • A canvas
  • Black gesso
  • Gloss gel
  • Crystal grain acrylic gel
  • Acrylic paint
  • Varnish
  • Brushes
  • Spatulas

INSTRUCTIONS:

Step 1:

Apply two coats of black gesso on the canvas (Liquitex gesso is more liquid and is ideal for this project).

Step 2:

Mix Pébéo gloss gel with acrylic paint. In terms of quantities, I use one-part gel and two parts acrylic paint. Then, create some shapes with a square brush. Wait one hour before moving to the next step.

Step 3:

Mix the crystal grain acrylic gel with an acrylic paint of your choice. Make more shapes with a spatula this time, since this mixture is thicker than the first one.

Step 4:

Use a fluid acrylic paint with a nozzle thin enough to let the paint flow and create 3D lines (Liquitex Soft Body Acrylic is ideal for this step).

Step 5:

Once everything is dry, apply Krylon’s Crystal Clear Glaze spray varnish for a glossy finish.
