Origami Technique: Little Gem Boxes

MATERIALS:

  • Origami paper
  • Scissors or craft knife
  • Ruler
  • Pencil

INSTRUCTIONS:

How to fold a triangular origami box

Step 1:

Cut the origami paper into long strips. For a larger origami shape, cut the strips to be 1 ¼ wide by 9 ¾ inches long or roughly the width of a standard ruler. Experiment with different sizes of origami paper to make different sized shapes.

Step 2:

With the back side of the paper facing up, fold a corner of the paper up to form a triangle. Firmly crease the fold. Turn the paper over and fold up another triangle up. Repeat this step until the entire strip of paper has been folded accordion style.

Step 3:

Unfold the paper and prepare it to take shape. Help the paper strip “roll into a shape”, by re-creasing all the horizontal folds so that the coloured side of the paper is on the outside.

Step 4:

Gently roll-up the paper, bringing the edge of the first triangle to the edge of the fourth triangle. Gently roll the form so that it wraps around itself.

Step 5:

When you have wrapped up as much of the paper as you can, fold down one of the corners of the remaining paper end and insert it between two overlapping folds to secure it in place.

TIPS

Crease your paper firmly
