Founded in London in 1832 by chemist William Winsor and artist Henry Newton, Winsor & Newton broke new creative ground by developing watercolours with durable pigments. Today, the brand still offers a vibrant colour palette using pigments of the highest possible quality. A quest for perfection has always driven its creators, whether it be for colours, mediums or brushes. Undisputed know-how, as well as increased environmental awareness, now present in its developments, have earned the brand numerous awards, including the title of official supplier to the British Royal Family (Royal Warrant) since 1841.
Among their most recent innovations are the new, cadmium-free colours. These colours, unlike cadmium imitations, have the same characteristics and qualities as colours with cadmium, i.e. remarkable opacity and lightfastness which guarantees colour permanence. Cadmium-free colours can now be found in Winsor & Newton Professional Watercolours and Artists’ Oils Colours.
Watercolours and gouache
Watercolours are at the root of Winsor & Newton, having even developed the first wet watercolours in 1835. Today, the brand offers two watercolour ranges, one professional and one introductory, as well as a collection of gouache paints – opaque watercolours, as opposed to regular watercolours which are transparent.
Oils
Since its very beginnings, Winsor & Newton has excelled in producing oils of remarkable and unequalled quality. The brand has even patented several innovations, such as the glass container and the first screw cap mechanism for foldable metal tubes. Today, it offers several oil collections, each with different characteristics that meet the unique needs of artists.
Acrylics
Released in 1970, Winsor & Newton acrylics were developed with the same quality and innovation as all other Winsor & Newton colour mediums. They use the latest resin technology to minimize colour changes during drying.
