Master a variety of techniques to create a unique portrait! In this two-part workshop, artist Maud Besson will guide you through the creation of a portrait using acrylic paint, as well as drawing and collage techniques. You will complete a work of art in two parts, while practicing these techniques. Join her and get creative every Wednesday for two weeks: December 8th and 15th.

Part II: Acrylic painting techniques and portrait making

In this second workshop, you will learn how to create a mixed media portrait using acrylic paint and collage techniques.

Step 1:

To begin, Maud will show you how to paint a face on the canvas you started during the first workshop. She will show you which colours to use and tell you more about mixing and applying acrylic paint, as well as brush use. She will give you relevant information and simple techniques for painting light and shadow, details and various other effects.

Step 2:

Maud will show you how to glue the patterns you collected to create the model's hairstyle. She will tell you more about the most efficient and durable ways to glue different types of paper on artwork for optimal results.


List of materials to bring:

✓ HB and/or B pencils
✓ Eraser
✓ A sketchbook
✓ 1 canvas (8 x 10 in, board or mounted)
✓ Gesso
✓ Glossy gel medium
✓ Glossy liquid medium
✓ Hog bristle and synthetic bristle paintbrushes in all sizes (square, round, fine; including one ¾ in square, one ½ in square; one ¼ in square)
✓ Acrylic set with primary colours (1 Black, 1 White, 1 Burnt Umber Brown)
✓ Decorative paper or newspaper for the collage (for your background)
✓ Magazine paper or other decorative items for the collage (for the model's hair)
✓ 1 glass jar of water
✓ Rags
✓ A well palette to mix your colours
✓ Hair dryer
