Creative Watercolour Practices: Part III (EN)
Explore the colourful world of watercolour! In this three-part watercolour painting workshop, BC-based artist Kathryn Wadel will guide you through painting techniques and creative exercises using watercolour paints, artist-grade materials and household items. Students will create a series of experimental watercolour paintings on cold press watercolour paper.

Part I (Starting with The Basics) and Part II (Creating Textures with Household Materials)

Couldn’t make it to Part I and II of the workshop? No worries! Kath presents different techniques in each part, so you can certainly complete Part III without having completed Part I and II.

Part III: Combining Techniques with Creative Drawing

In Part III, Kathryn will provide a step-by-step demonstration for how to combine creative and textured watercolour painting techniques with ink drawing pens. Students will have the opportunity to combine these techniques to create a series of watercolour paintings and ink illustrations on cold press watercolour paper.


List of materials to bring:

✓ Watercolour paints (your favourite colours)
✓ Watercolour paint palette (metal, plastic or ceramic)
✓ Watercolour paintbrushes (short handle, natural or synthetic bristles: 1 in flat, oval or mop brush; #2, #4, #6, #8 round and flat brushes; as close to these sizes as possible)
✓ Watercolour paper pad (cold press, 9 x 12 in, 140 lb/300 g)
✓ Waterproof pens (black)
✓ Painter’s tape (1 in width)
✓ Support board (masonite, wood or plastic board, approximately 1-2 in larger than paper size)
✓ Two recycled plastic or glass jars (for paint water)
✓ Plastic, paper or reusable straw
✓ Paper towel or reusable painting rag
✓ H or HB graphite pencil
✓ Eraser
✓ Pencil sharpener
✓ Recycled single-use plastic bag
✓ Salt (coarse or fine ground)
✓ Cotton swabs
✓ Sea silk sponges or upcycled kitchen sponge
✓ Masking fluid/masking liquid frisket
✓ Masking fluid applicator or old paintbrush
✓ Paper clip or toothpick
✓ Recycled old toothbrush
✓ Hair dryer
✓ Rubbing alcohol
