In this beginners’ charcoal drawing workshop, artist Kathryn Wadel will guide you through simple drawing exercises and demonstrate how she combines them in her drawing practice. You’ll learn helpful tips and techniques using com-pressed, powdered, raw and artist-made charcoals, kneaded erasers, blending stumps, household items and more!

Part 1 : Get to Know Your Tools and Techniques
In part one, Kathryn will introduce you to drawing materials, including visual examples of their applications. She’ll guide you through exercises to test the tools, create gradient scales, as well as to learn mark-making and expressive line work.
Part 2 : Combining Techniques and Drawing Practice
In part two, Kathryn will demonstrate how she combines these techniques to create a simple landscape drawing using charcoal on paper. She’ll share her artistic approach and helpful tips for drawing using charcoal. Participants are welcome to practice combining the techniques to create a personalized drawing.
