Learn all the basics of working in soft pastels and charcoal! In this introductory drawing workshop, you will explore a variety of foundational blending and layering techniques, as well as how to apply these techniques to a drawing. This workshop is great for beginners interested in these mediums, as well as intermediate artists who need a refresher.

Part 1: Material overview and techniques
In Part 1, Gabrielle will go over all the necessary materials, including different types of soft pastels and charcoal, as well as paper. You will then follow along as Gabrielle demonstrates several techniques and applications.
Part 2: Apple studies
To continue, you will explore how to use the techniques learned in Part 1 towards apple studies in both soft pastel and charcoal.
List of materials to bring:
✓ Watercolour paper (140 lb, cold press) or soft pastel paper (different colours; minimum size 8 x 10 in)
✓ Soft pastels (a nice variety of colours, e.g. set of 12)
✓ Pastel pencils (optional, but good to have)
✓ Charcoal (e.g. willow charcoal, charcoal pencil, charcoal sticks)
✓ Watercolour brush for blending
✓ Graphite pencil
✓ Drawing surface (e.g. masonite board that fits your paper size)
✓ Blending stump
✓ Kneadable eraser
