This introductory linocut workshop will teach you how to engrave simple designs on lino plates and print them by hand on paper and fabric. Taught by artist Maud Besson, this fun and creative workshop will guide you step by step and show you all the basic techniques of linocut printing.

Part 1: Materials and Introduction
Overview of the basic materials you need for linocut printing. You’ll learn about the quality of lino plates sold in stores, the purpose of different knives and blade shapes, differences between types of ink, how to choose the right paper, and other helpful linocut printing supplies.
Part 2: Linocut Projects
We will review how to create a linocut from start to finish. You'll learn how to transfer a design and how to carve it.
Part 3: Printing
Maud will then show you how to print your design on paper and fabric. At the end of the workshop, you’ll learn how to appropriately clean your tools.
List of materials to bring:
✓ Canson Sketch Pad (9x12 in.)
✓ Canson Mixed Media Pad (9x12 in. 160 gsm) and/or Half-Tint Paper Pad (9x12 in.)
✓ Lino Speedy Cut plate: Two 4x5.5 in. plates or one 6.75x11 in. plate.
✓ Water-based black linocut ink
✓ Fabric linocut ink (optional)
✓ Linocut knife sets
✓ Rubber roller (2.5- or 4-inch)
✓ Baren (optional if you are working with Speedy Cut plates)
✓ Plexi (acrylic) or glass sheet (8x10 or 9x12 inch) for spreading ink
✓ Broad black Sharpie
✓ Fine black Sharpie
✓ Pencil (B)
✓ Bag or piece of cotton fabric or cotton T-shirt
✓ X-Acto knife
✓ Cutting mat
✓ Ruler (10, 12 or 15 inches)
✓ Rags, cleaning wipes and toothbrush to clean plaque
