In this watercolour class, you will learn how to paint a stag beetle using a bold and colourful palette. Some drawing and watercolour painting experience is recommended.

Open to beginners and intermediates.
Ages 16 to 99.

Part 1: Beetle drawing and watercolour base layers.

We will begin with sketching the beetle from the photo reference provided. Next, we will paint the watercolour base layers starting with the core of the beetle.

Part 2: Mid-layer painting and shadow build up.

Working our way around the beetle, we will continue building up layers of light and dark colours until we achieve a bold and high-contrast painting. Lastly, we will paint the beetle’s legs and add any finishing touches.

 

List of materials to bring:

✓ Watercolour palette: clean clear or white plastic takeout tray or lid will also work
✓ Masking tape
✓ Watercolour paint: Carmine (rose red), warm blue (e.g., ultramarine blue), warm red (e.g., cadmium red) and black
✓ Drawing board (minimum 11”x14”)
✓ Watercolour paper (140lb cold press, minimum 9”x12” sheet, plus a scrap for testing colours)
✓ HB pencil
✓ White eraser
✓ Sharpener
✓ Watercolour brushes (round #2, round #4)
✓ Paper towel or cloth rag
✓ Tissue box with rubber bands for makeshift desk easel
✓ Water for paint (in jar or container)
