Canvas Advent Calendar

This easy-to-make and reusable calendar will help kids—and their parents!—have fun in the days leading up to Christmas. Be creative with your surprises. Much more original and healthier than the traditional chocolate-filled calendars you find in stores.

Materials:

Large sheet of decorative paper
Other sheets or scraps of decorative paper
Small personalized photos
11 x 14 in. canvas
Circle template
Acrylic paint
Paintbrush
Utility knife
Glue dots
Folding tool
Metal ruler
Cutting mat

Instructions:

Step 1: Paint the edge of the mounted canvas and let dry.

Step 2: Using the utility knife and metal ruler, cut the large sheet of decorative paper the same size as the canvas.

Step 3: Determine the position the 25 small doors on the canvas. (The doors are all aligned in the example provided, but you can position them differently.)

Step 4: For each door, cut out three sides and fold the fourth side. (In the example provided, the cut lines are blue and the fold lines are pink.)

Step 5: Cut little squares of decorative paper or photos the same size as the doors and glue them to the large sheet of paper used as the background. Once the doors are open, you can write little notes on the paper or photos.

Step 6: Use the circle template to trace 25 circles on different scraps of decorative paper and cut them out. Write the numbers 1 to 25 on each circle for each day of December leading up to and including Christmas.

Step 7: Glue a circle onto each door, leaving a bit of room on the side to open the door.

Step 8: Use a glue dot to glue each door shut temporarily until it is time to open it.

Step 9: Keep a space open to add a title to your calendar.

Step 10: Now you’re ready to discover what’s hidden behind each of the doors throughout the month of December.
