Glamorous Stripes

Create a decorative canvas composed of stripes and golden confetti with just a few simple techniques. Black, white and gold: a trendy and chic colour combination.

Materials:

Mounted canvas prepared with regular or gallery gesso (choose a large size canvas for a big wall or for visual impact)
Black acrylic paint
Gold spray paint
Blank plastic stencil sheet
Frog Tape masking tape
Precision knife
Flat paintbrush (approx. 1" wide)

Instructions:

Step 1: Using a ruler and pencil, make light pencil markings one inch apart on opposite sides of the canvas.

Step 2: Using the pencil markings as a guide, lay strips of masking tape across the canvas to create a regular stripe pattern. Rub the edges of the masking tape with the back of your thumbnail to ensure the tape adheres to the canvas, and to prevent air bubbles from forming.

Step 3: Paint the visible canvas stripes between the strips of masking tape with black acrylic paint. Don’t forget to paint the sides of the canvas.

Step 4: Wait approximately one hour for the paint to dry or until it is dry to the touch before removing the strips of masking tape.

Step 5: Draw approximately three circles in the middle of the plastic stencil sheet and cut them out with the precision knife.

Step 6: Move the stencil to different spots on the canvas and spray a bit of paint so that the golden dots overlap the black and white stripes. Let the spray paint dry a few minutes before placing the stencil sheet on top of it.
