Intermediate Modern Calligraphy Workshop (English only)

Do you have a basic knowledge of calligraphy, but are looking to take your skills to the next level? As a sequel to Introduction to Modern Calligraphy, we will start off by reviewing some basic strokes and drills. Next, we will go through how to form uppercase letters and how to connect them with lowercase letters to form words. Finally, Liz will demonstrate how you can decorate your calligraphy words with simple yet beautiful flourishes (the lovely swooshes and swirls you see in calligraphy!), as well as some advanced drills to help you achieve them.

Participants must have attended Introduction to Modern Calligraphy, or already have a basic knowledge of calligraphy.


Part 1 :
Review + Basic Strokes & Drills


Get started with a review of what was covered in Introduction to Modern Calligraphy. You will also warm up your hand by practicing basic strokes and drills.
Part 2 :
Forming Uppercase Letters & Words


Here, you will practice forming uppercase letters with basic strokes, and then combine them with lowercase letters (taught in Introduction to Modern Calligraphy) to form words. Connections with uppercase and lowercase letters will also be covered.
Part 3 :
Advanced Drills & Simple Flourishes


Once comfortable with uppercase and lowercase letters, you will learn some advanced drills and simple flourishes to decorate your calligraphy letters and truly take them to the next level.

Create a beautiful, mixed media cityscape! In this all-level workshop, we will start by reviewing all the necessary materials and various uses. Collage and acrylic painting techniques will also be discussed before moving on to the first step of the project: a collage background. Through step-by-step instructions, artist Maud Besson will then show you how to create a city on the background using acrylic paint.

Open to beginners.

Maud will demonstrate paper types for creating collages on canvas, as well as recommended acrylic mediums for this type of collage. She will also expand on acrylic paint and recommended paintbrushes.

Part 3 :
Creating an urban landscape with acrylics


To complete the project, you will learn how to paint a city using acrylics through step-by-step instructions.

Do you often take a few minutes out of your day to experience the breathtaking moments of a sunset? Why not bring the beauty indoors with your very own sunset painting!

During this three-part workshop, Vancouver-based artist, Kathryn Wadel, will demonstrate how to customize your colour palette using primary colours, as well as guide you through the step-by-step creation of an original sunset-inspired acrylic painting.

Get your materials ready


Get started with an overview of the materials you will be using. You will prepare your colour palette so that it is ready to mix.
Part 2 :
Start sketching and painting


During this second part, you will create composition sketches and enjoy a colour mixing demonstration. Then, you will get a step-by-step demonstration of painting techniques for creating your dream sunset.
Part 3 :
Clean up and ask questions


In this last part, you will get the opportunity to ask questions, and get some tips on how to clean up after painting. The instructor will give a useful demonstration on how to clean your brushes and keep them in good shape.
