Paint Tube Labels

Instructions:

Some pigments are much more expensive than others. True cadmium and cobalt pigments are among the most expensive, whereas earth pigments, such as ochre, sienna and umber, are less expensive. Manufacturers offer imitations of more expensive colours made up of a combination of several cheaper pigments. The words “hue” or “imit.” written on the paint tube, combinations of pigments used to make the colour and low price are all signs of an imitation. Although these imitations are an interesting alternative, they react inconsistently when mixed.

The opacity of a colour can be modified by adding a transparent medium to an opaque colour or a touch of titanium white to a transparent colour.

For paintings displayed indoors, all colours are sufficiently lightfast over a long period of time. For projects exposed to outdoor light, however, try using only colours with a very good lightfastness rating.

Pigment identification code

The first two letters of the pigment identification code indicate the colour and the subsequent numbers indicate the pigment’s chemical composition.

PB = blue pigment
PG = green pigment
PR = red pigment
PV = violet pigment
PY = yellow pigment
PO = orange pigment
PW = white pigment
PBR = brown pigment
PBK = black pigment

Ultramarine blue, for example, is identified as PB29 and quinacridone magenta, as PR122.

You will need:

1- Colour name
Paint colour gets its name from the pigment that is used or the hue obtained from mixing pigments.

2- Series
The series indicates the price band to which the colour belongs. Some pigments are more expensive than others, depending on where they come from and how complicated they are to produce.

3- Paint quality
Often identified as “student quality” or “artist quality,” the fine and extra-fine ranges are determined by how finely ground the pigment particles are and the concentration of pigment compared with the binder.

4- Colour composition
Paint colour pigments are identified using a system of letters and numbers. Each pigment has its own code, making it possible to compare colours among manufacturers (see additional information under “Tips”).

5- Lightfastness (resistance to fading when exposed to light)
Pigments can fade or change when exposed to UV rays. The lightfastness rating on a paint label can range from poor to very good.

6- Opacity
The opacity of paint is its capacity to cover underlying colours, based on the way light is reflected by the particles. Manufacturers indicate on the paint tubes whether the paint is opaque, semi-opaque (translucent) or transparent.

7- Consistency
Oil paint is available in only one consistency, which can be modified with linseed oil or mediums. Acrylic paint is available as a high-viscosity (heavy body) acrylic or a fluid (soft body) acrylic.
