Texture And Body

from $16.49

Paste mediums give body to the paint and allow you to do thick work to create texture and impasto. The main ingredients that give these mediums their thick consistency are waxes, mastics and gels.

Instructions:

Flemish medium, which contains mastic resin, adds transparency to your paint and helps the coats to bond quickly.

• Venetian medium, which contains wax, creates a more matte finish.
1) Dutch medium can help you produce transparent glazes.
2) Florentine medium (similar to Venetian medium) makes a satin-finish paste.
3) Coating (impasto) mediums increase the quantity of paint so you can apply
it in generous coats without going through your base paint too quickly.

Drying time
Driers, or siccatives are substances derived from metallic salts that speed up the oil
paint’s drying time. Paint oxidation is a chemical process that takes quite some time;
if you want to make it go faster, make sure you proceed with caution to avoid throwing
off the balance between the first coats of paint, which dry more quickly, and the top
coats, which are wetter.

Tip
Driers are intended for use only in very small quantities: Never use more than 5% of
the paint’s volume. One or two drops are enough for a pile of paint the size of a cherry.
Each drop represents about 2% of the total volume of paint.
Brown Courtrai drier is considered to be the most powerful sort of drier. It’s made with
a base of lead oxide and manganese oxide, and helps to deep-dry thick coats.
White Courtrai drier is less powerful, but many people prefer it for its paler colour.
Cobalt drier has a dark purple colour. It’s made by heating cobalt salts in linseed oil,
and is used to speed up surface coat drying. It’s mainly intended to be used in colours
applied in thin coats that don’t need to dry at any depth.

Japan drier is made with manganese and contains alkyd resin. It’s ideal for adding to
poster paints, but it makes them more liquid and glossy.

Harlem siccative is more of a hardening medium than a drier. It’s a mix of resin, oil
and turpentine that can be used pure for surface glazes, or diluted.

Durability
Oils are used as binders in oil paint. Once dry, the oil forms a solid, non-dissolvable film, usually quite hard. Most oils used in paints are plant-based vegetable oils, but not all of them are driers (i.e., they don’t all dry to form a solid film.) Linseed oil is frequently used as a medium for oil, particularly for paints that are sold in tubes. It dries the fastest, provides good transparency and gives colours a glossy finish. Once dry, the paint film is very durable. However, in addition to being a bit dark in its liquid state, linseed oil has a tendency to yellow, so it’s best not to use it for mixing with white or pale colours. Clarified linseed oil is its base form; uncoloured, it’s a bit paler.

Polymerized linseed oil (stand oil) is linseed oil boiled until it reaches a honey-like consistency. It’s generally diluted when used for painting glazes, and is an ingredient in a number of mediums. It dries slowly, but creates a durable paint film that doesn’t hold brush marks. It doesn’t yellow like raw linseed oil.

Poppyseed oil is paler than linseed oil and doesn’t have a tendency to yellow. It dries much more slowly and paint films tend to crack over time when it’s used. Most bluecoloured oils are made with poppyseed oil. Safflower oil also dries more slowly than linseed oil. It’s often used in light-coloured paints. It can be replaced by poppyseed oil in recipes for paint colours and mediums.
English walnut oil yellows very little in the long term, and creates high-quality paint films. However, it’s a bit less drying than linseed oil, and it can go rancid.
