Usually used on paper, watercolours are distinguished by the translucent effects they create. Watercolour ground is a primer that can be applied to a multitude of surfaces. Rendered porous by the ground, almost any surface can now be suitable for watercolour use.

How to apply watercolour ground?

Step 1: Apply a base coat of watercolour ground to a piece of wood and let dry.

Step 2: Draw your design (repeat if desired) with a pale-coloured wood pencil.

Step 3: Using a drawing gum pen, mask the designs and let dry.

Step 4: Apply watercolours as usual, let dry and rub off drawing gum.

You will need:

A piece of wood
Watercolour ground
Watercolour paints
Drawing gum
Paint brush(es)
Palette

Use watercolour ground on metal, ceramics, wood, glass, cardboard, canvases, plaster, plexiglass, or to transform any type of paper into watercolour paper.

Try different ground colours (available in several colours).

You can use the ground’s stability to your advantage and go back if you make a mistake. Simply reapply a coat of ground on the area that needs correcting, let dry and start over!
