One-on-One Art Projects [1 hour]

In this private studio session, students can book a one-on-one appointment to work on personalized artwork with the help of an instructor. Students will have the opportunity to strengthen their artistic practice, improve their knowledge of DeSerres art materials, apply techniques, develop compositional development, and work on personalized artwork in the process. Projects can range from drawing, mixed media, and painting with acrylics, oils or watercolours. Students are required to book a free consultation with the instructor to discuss their projects prior to registering for their private studio session.

In this intermediate drawing class, the instructor will review techniques from our Introduction to Character Design class with graphite, coloured pencils and markers to draw the human figure using anatomical references. Students will have the opportunity to practise these techniques to create a series of sketches on paper, and further develop their character designs by exploring imaginative, “out of the box” drawing practices. The skills learned in our Introduction to Character Design are an asset.

In this self-expressive drawing class, the instructor will guide students through gradation, highlight/shadow, dimensional perspective and proportion techniques to create a portrait drawing on paper. Students will have the opportunity to apply these techniques and explore self-expressive representation to create a portrait on paper. Students are encouraged to bring in a printed photo reference. Photo references will also be provided.

Intermediate Resin Tinting with Alcohol Inks [2 hours]

Saturday, May 25th — 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
In this technique-focused class, the instructor will introduce students to professional resin tinting techniques using alcohol-based inks. The instructor will guide students through the resin tinting process to achieve dimension through transparent and translucent layering. Students will have the opportunity to experiment with the materials and techniques to create abstract resin artwork on plexiglass. The skills learned in our Introduction to Resin on Wood class are an asset, but not required.

Introduction to Fluid Acrylic Painting & Colour Theory [2.5 hours]

Saturday, June 1st — 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
In this introductory class, the instructor will introduce students to a variety of professional fluid acrylic paints, mediums, painting techniques and colour theory application. Students will learn colour theory terminology, how to mix secondary and tertiary colours using basic primary colours, and practise tinting and shading to create a unique colour palette for their paintings. Students will have the opportunity to experiment with the materials, practise techniques and create an abstract, fluid acrylic painting on canvas. The skills learned in this class can be further developed in our intermediate and advanced fluid acrylic painting classes.

They will also practise crosshatching, pointillism, shading, light/shadow techniques, and develop dimensional perspective to create a series of drawing studies. In this introductory class, students will learn how to mount photographs onto wood and apply a high-gloss archival finish using professional quality resin. Through a step-by-step process, the instructor will guide students through photo mounting techniques and resin application. Students are encouraged to bring a printed photograph to personalize their project. Additional images will also be provided. The skills learned in this class can be further developed in our intermediate and advanced resin classes.
