Watercolour ink drop technique: tips to get started easily

The study of ink diffusion is as beautiful as it is fascinating. The dynamism of the shapes from a single touch of ink on a wet sheet of paper is an art in itself. Captivating and unpredictable, this application technique spreads into thousands of possibilities!

The ink drip technique offers a unique freedom of expression. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced artist, you'll be amazed by the organic beauty of the results. Let yourself be surprised!

Materials needed:

  • Watercolour ink
  • Brush
  • Watercolour paper
  • Water

How to create the ink drop technique: step-by-step instructions

Step 1: Prepare the water outline on watercolour paper

With a natural-bristle brush (for better absorption capacity), trace your desired subject on watercolour paper, using only water. Be sure to brush very wet and interconnected strokes.

This first step is crucial: think of your outline as a network of small rivers that will guide the ink. Don't be afraid to be generous with the water but avoid puddles! The paper should shine slightly without being soaked.

Step 2: Apply ink drop by drop

With a pipette, gently place one drop of ink at a time on the still-wet strokes of the drawing.

Start by bringing the pipette close to the paper and let a drop fall. Let it spread along the paths traced with water. You can add several colours that will meet and blend in a harmonious and unpredictable way.

Step 3: Let the work dry

Upon immediate contact with the paper, the ink will spread along the wet strokes to give colour to the drawing. Let it dry on a flat surface.

Avoid touching or moving your work during drying! The colours will stabilize, the contours will become more defined, and subtle effects will appear as the water evaporates.

Tips

To avoid buckling, tape your watercolour paper sheet with adhesive tape on the sides to a hard surface.

Also experiment beforehand with different amounts of water: the wetter the outline, the farther the ink will travel. The less water there is, the more concentrated and intense the colours will remain.

Let the unexpected become your creative ally

The beauty of the ink drop technique lies in its spontaneous nature. Each work is unique, impossible to reproduce identically.

Whether you create abstract landscapes, delicate florals or abstract compositions, this technique will always offer you surprises. So grab your brush, prepare your inks, and dive into your next creation!
