Gesso is a base coat used to prepare surfaces before painting for better grip. It protects and seals the substrate which prevents paint absorption, in other words, the paint will rest on top of the surface instead of getting sucked into it. The use of gesso is especially important when using oil paints; in direct contact with the fabric, oils can eat away at the cotton canvas over time.

Tri-Art professional quality gesso is made with 100% acrylic emulsion and contains calcium carbonate. It is pH neutral and ideal for oil paintings and acrylics. It is waterproof when dry and does not crack, crumble, flake, or lift off the substrate.

Tri-Art Sludge is an economical alternative to both a neutral ground and neutral colour. It can be used in the place of gesso when a muted base is desired. Sludge is semi-opaque and although grey in tone, can be used in small quantities as an opacifier or medium toned colour extender. The thick Sludge has similar texture capabilities as a high viscosity acrylic colour, while the thin version is comparable to a liquid acrylic. Sludge has a light tooth, making it a suitable ground for mixed media applications. As this is paint made with 100% acrylic emulsion, it is comparable in character to other acrylics. It is highly adhesive to a variety of surfaces, dries to a water resistant, semi-gloss finish and can be easily applied with painting tools. It used to be that watercolor painters had few options beyond white paper or a few colored boards. Now you can turn almost any surface into a toned or black ground for watercolor painting, as well as collage, pastels, pencils and mixed media work.

The titanium white watercolour ground, as well as turning any surface into watercolor paper, allows you to rescue areas within a painting done on watercolor paper! It’s so easy to apply this ground over an area within a painting that needs rescuing—or for working on different compositional areas. You can also lift and scrub without damaging the painting surface.

Just brush this heavily pigmented, acrylic-based ground onto absorbent and non-absorbent surfaces (for best results abrade the surface with sandpaper or steel wool before brushing on the ground.)

One coat works on most materials—allow the surface to cure for 24 hours before painting. Once dry, it will not reactivate. This product can be thinned up to 10% with water.
