They allow you to frame either a gallery-profile or standard-profile canvas without the canvas protruding from the back. Gallery photo frames with glass are also deeper, creating a more dimensional look on the wall. What is a mat? A mat is a piece of cardboard, usually with a centre opening, that creates space between the artwork and the frame. Mats are designed for paper artwork only, not canvases. When a mat is included, there is typically a glass panel as well to protect both the artwork and the mat.
