Making candles well starts with understanding how three elements interact: wax determines burn time and fragrance retention, the wick controls flame size and melt pool behaviour, and the fragrance defines how strongly the scent carries through a room. Soy wax melts at a low temperature and bonds reliably to glass containers, making it the natural starting point for a first project. Beeswax, denser and naturally scented, performs better in pillar formats. Wick sizing is often underestimated: too thin, it tunnels down the centre without melting the edges; too wide, it produces soot and shortens the candle's lifespan. For more decorative results, sand wax creates a granular surface texture without a mould, and dried flowers embedded in wax produce a handcrafted finish that is increasingly sought after. Silicone moulds open up complex shapes with clean release and fine detail that other mould types rarely match. To go further, explore our Candles & Soap Making selection and our Crafts section.
