Oil painting rewards patience and offers a depth of colour that few other mediums can match.

DeSerres carries the essentials to get started: oil paints in student and professional grades, brushes suited to oils, linseed and walnut oil mediums, solvents, and primed canvases ready to paint on. Everything in one place, from trusted brands.

How do I get started with oil painting?

Oil painting has a reputation for being complex, but the basics are straightforward. Start with a limited palette of 6 to 8 colours, a few brushes in different sizes, linseed oil as a medium, and odourless mineral spirits for thinning and cleaning. Paint on a primed canvas or canvas panel. Work fat over lean: use more oil in upper layers than in lower ones to prevent cracking. Varnish your finished work once it's fully dry.
