How do I get started with oil painting?

Oil painting has a reputation for being complex, but the basics are straightforward. Start with a limited palette of 6 to 8 colours, a few brushes in different sizes, linseed oil as a medium, and odourless mineral spirits for thinning and cleaning. Paint on a primed canvas or canvas panel. Work fat over lean: use more oil in upper layers than in lower ones to prevent cracking. Varnish your finished work once it's fully dry.
