How do oil pastels differ from soft pastels?
Oil pastels contain an oil binder that makes them smooth, creamy and resistant to smudging once dry. They don't require fixative and can be blended with a finger, a cloth or mineral spirits for painterly effects. Soft pastels are drier, more powdery and blend more easily, but require fixative to protect the surface. Oil pastels work well on textured paper, canvas and even glass.
