A pastel pencil combines the precision of the pencil format with the pigmentation and velvety texture of soft pastel. Its pigmented core allows a degree of control that is impossible to achieve with a pastel stick held flat: clean outlines can be drawn, details can be added into an already blended area, or an accent can be reinforced without disturbing the surrounding layers. This precision makes it a preferred tool for portrait work, where the definition of facial features, lashes, highlights in the eyes, or the edges between shadow and lit areas requires fine control over the deposit of material. Pastel pencils work equally well on their own or combined with soft or oil pastels, stepping in at the end of a piece to refine areas the stick can no longer reach with precision. The pencil can be sharpened to further narrow the stroke as needed.
