DeSerres carries a selection of plaster and papier-mâché objects suited to crafters of all levels, from beginners to experienced decorative artists.
Working with Plaster and Papier-Mâché
Plaster objects are cast in moulds and have a dense, smooth surface that absorbs paint evenly. A light sanding before painting helps remove any surface imperfections and improves adhesion. Acrylic paint is the most commonly used medium for plaster, offering good coverage, a wide colour range and fast drying times. Multiple thin coats produce a more even, professional finish than a single heavy application. Papier-mâché objects are lighter and slightly more textured than plaster, with a surface that responds well to both paint and decoupage techniques. Both materials benefit from a finishing varnish to protect the painted surface and add durability. Gilding, crackle effects and antiquing techniques can also be applied to both plaster and papier-mâché for a more decorative, aged finish.
