The pan is the traditional watercolour format: compact, ready to use with a damp brush and easy to carry, it is particularly suited to outdoor work, travel sketchbooks and short sessions. Unlike tubes, pans require no palette: the surface of the pan is moistened directly to pick up colour. Individual pans make it possible to replace exactly the colours that have run out in an existing set, or to build a custom palette in an empty case. Half-pan sets offer a balanced, ready-to-use selection, from the compact 12-colour format for travel to the more complete 24-colour format for a broader palette.
