DeSerres Woodless Coloured Pencils have unique lead sticks with a lacquer coating. Their innovative woodless design results in more expressive drawing thanks to a greater distribution of pigments and a thick lead. They allow for delicate and precise layers or wide and intense strokes, and thanks to their soft lead, they blend extraordinarily well. They can be sharpened using a traditional pencil sharpener, and the shavings can be used to make gradients.

Graphite or coloured pencils: which one to choose?

The graphite pencil is the foundation of drawing: hardness grades range from 9H (very hard, fine and precise lines, ideal for technical drawing and architecture) to 9B (very soft, dark and expressive marks, perfect for sketching and gestural drawing). For portraiture and value rendering, mid-range grades such as HB, 2B and 4B are the most versatile. Coloured pencils allow for detailed, controlled colour work: layers are built up to intensify the hue, colours are blended through gradual pressure, and smooth transitions are achieved that are difficult to replicate with other media.
