Pencil hardness determines the type of mark and value you get: hard leads (H, 2H, 4H, 6H) produce a fine, light line suited to light sketching and technical drawing; soft leads (B through 9B) deliver a deeper black and work better for dark values, texture and expressive work. The blending stump lets you blend deposited graphite to create smooth transitions and gradients without going back in with the pencil. The kneaded eraser lifts graphite by pressure without damaging the paper, making it possible to lighten an area or pull out highlights in a graphite or charcoal drawing.
