Sennelier "à l'écu" pastels are extra soft pastels composed of high-quality pure pigments grounded with a natural transparent binder. The smoothness and velvetiness of these pastels are the result of a perfect balance between binder and pigment. For gradient shades, increasing amounts of mineral fines are added, ultimately tending towards white. Their exceptional brightness is due to the quality of pigment used, as well as the natural mineral fines discovered by Sennelier in 1905, which have been used ever since.

It took Sennelier more than three years, at the beginning of the 20th century, to formulate this range of pastels, and thus creating one of the largest chromatic ranges of pastels. Over the course of the century, this range of tones has evolved, but its essence remains unchanged.
