Screen Printing & Linocut: Printmaking for Every Level
Screen printing and linocut are two of the most accessible and expressive printmaking techniques available to artists and makers. Both allow you to create bold, repeatable images on paper, fabric and other surfaces, with results that are graphic, tactile and distinctly handmade. DeSerres carries a selection of screen printing and linocut supplies suited to beginners and experienced printmakers alike.
Choosing Between Screen Printing and Linocut
Screen printing uses a mesh screen and squeegee to push ink through a stencilled design onto a surface. It is well suited to flat, graphic imagery and works on both paper and fabric. Specialty inks are available for different surfaces, including water-based inks for paper and fabric inks for textiles. Linocut is a relief printing technique in which a design is carved into a linoleum or soft-cut block, inked and pressed onto paper or fabric. Carving tools come in a range of profiles: V-gouges, U-gouges and flat chisels, each producing a different line quality and texture. Both techniques reward experimentation and are well suited to edition printing, pattern design and mixed media work.
