Watercolour and Gouache: Two Mediums, One Passion
Watercolour and gouache share a water-based foundation but produce very different results. DeSerres carries both mediums in student and professional grades, in pans, tubes and sets, from the brands artists trust for colour consistency and pigment quality. Whether you prefer transparent washes or bold, opaque coverage, you'll find what you need here.
Should I start with watercolour or gouache?
Both are water-based and beginner-friendly, but they work differently. Watercolour is transparent: you build up colour in layers and preserve the white of the paper for highlights. Gouache is opaque: you can paint light colours over dark ones and correct mistakes more easily. If you're drawn to loose, luminous work, start with watercolour. If you prefer flat, graphic colour or illustration, gouache is the better fit. Many artists use both together for maximum flexibility. Explore our Paintbrushes and Paper to complete your setup.
