Super fine yarn, also referred to as weight #1 in the standard classification, is the most delicate yarn in the range. Its extreme fineness gives it specific properties that set it apart from standard-weight yarns. It requires very small-diameter needles or a fine crochet hook and produces a tightly knit, dense, and wear-resistant fabric. It is this density that makes it the reference yarn for knitting socks: a tight stitch structure holds up better against repeated friction inside a shoe and retains its shape after many washes. A wool and nylon blend composition is particularly common for this use, as the wool provides thermal comfort and natural elasticity, while the nylon reinforces resistance to abrasion at high-friction areas such as the heel and toe. The striped and multicolour shades available in this weight produce automatic stripe effects as the knitting progresses, without needing to switch skeins.
