Acrylic Stained Glass Sculpture

Materials:

  • DeSerres acrylic sheet
  • Heavy duty utility knife
  • Metal ruler
  • China marker or Sharpie
  • Mango alcohol-based markers
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Paintbrush
  • Hot glue gun
  • Hot glue sticks
  • Foamboard

How to make a stained-glass sculpture

Step 1: Leaving the protective plastic on your acrylic sheet, measure, score and snap it until you have 3 pieces in various sizes.

Step 2: Peel back the protective plastic and colour on the acrylic using alcohol-based markers.

Step 3: Dip a paintbrush in rubbing alcohol and paint over your marker scribbles. The alcohol-based marker ink will be repelled by the alcohol and you will be able to push it around, creating a watercolour like effect. Do this to all 3 pieces.

Step 4: Once your acrylic pieces have dried, cut a piece of foamboard to be the base of your sculpture. With a utility knife, cut grooves in the foamboard that are the width and thickness of your acrylic pieces.

Step 5: Apply a line of hot glue to the bottom edge of your Acrylic pieces and insert them into the foamboard groves. Display this new artistic creation on a desk or in a window where the light can filter through it.

Tips:

  • If the edge of the plastic is rough it can be sanded
  • Measure twice, cut once
  • Chose colours that layer well as you will be able to see through them and the colours will blend
