This trendy dye technique is very easy to do, no need to be an experienced artist. Let your creativity guide you for stunning results!
Materials:
- 3 Jewel Tones Tie-Dye Kits (with colour pigments, soda ash dye fixative, gloves and rubber bands)
- small ice cubes
- metal grid and container for collecting melted ice
- 2 small plastic cups for pigments
- One 100% cotton pencil case (or any other small cotton item, available in stores)
- One 100% cotton tote bag
- One 100% cotton white t-shirt
- 1 piece of cardboard and tape to hold the ice
- 1 container and hot water for the fixative
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare your fabric
In order for the dye to stay on your fabric long-term, you must first mix it with the fixative (in the Jewel Tones Tie-Dye Kit) in hot water.
Let your fabric soak for 20 minutes, then wring it out.
Step 2: Cover with ice
Once your fabric is ready to dye, you can place it on the metal grid and cover it completely with ice.
You can create any shape (more or less crumpled) and use the elastic bands.
Tips:
- The smaller the ice cubes, the better!
- If you have a small piece of fabric, using cardboard with tape will help keep your ice on the fabric.

Step 3: Sprinkle the dye on the ice using small cups or a plastic spoon.
Let your creativity flow! You can also leave blank areas to create interesting effects. Don't hesitate to use gloves to avoid getting your hands dirty.

Step 4: Let the ice melt
Sit tight and let the magic happen! Melting time strongly depends on outdoor temperature.
Tip: Once the ice has melted, check your results by laying your fabric flat. If you find that some areas need more dye, feel free to add an ice cube sprinkled with dye and wait for it to melt. On the other hand, if you find the dye too intense, place an ice cube on the dyed area to dilute the colour.

Step 5: Rinse the fabric
To finish, run the fabric under water! If you want to create more pastel shades, rinse immediately after the ice melts. If you want brighter colours, wait a few hours before rinsing.
