Qualities:

Application

Apply as a final varnish over dry acrylic paint.
Varnish surface and environment must be clean, dry and dust free.
Acrylic paintings must be completely dried and cured for 48-72 hours before varnishing. Thicker acrylic applications may take more time to cure.
Application may be done by brush or spray. Generally a sprayed application will be thinner, smoother and more even. Rolling or sponging application is not recommended.

Caution: Acrylic paints and mediums become increasingly brittle in cold weather. Do not apply below 60°F.

Tips & Techniques

Use a wide, soft hair brush. Generally, a 1 to 4 inch flat brush is used, depending on the surface area.
Apply Liquitex varnish in 1-3 thin coats, rather than 1 thick coat. A thick coat will take longer to dry, may dry cloudy, may drip or sag during application and has a greater chance of showing brush strokes when dry.
When applying Liquitex Matte Varnish, apply no more than 1-2 thin coats. A thick application may result in cloudiness when dry. If more than 2 coats are desired, first varnish with gloss varnish until desired thickness is achieved and then apply a final coat of matte varnish.
Canvas should be placed horizontally in order to prevent the varnish from running. After varnishing, the surface should be shielded with a protective "tent". This will prevent any dust or airborne particles from settling into varnish as it dries.
Apply Liquitex varnish in slightly overlapping pattern that covers entire artwork. Apply in horizontal and vertical brush strokes, so that entire area is evenly coated.
Do not rework areas you might miss as the brush could pick up partially dried varnish and cause clouding. If areas are missed, wait until the varnish is dry and apply another coat.

Spray Application: Use for textured surfaces (thick impasto, thick textures), where brush application may result in foaming and fragile surfaces (watercolor, tempera, graphite, pastel, gouache), where brush application may disrupt drawing or painted surface.

Thinning: Do not thin, as it will weaken the varnish film and adhesion.

Removal: Not removable. Do not attempt to remove these varnishes with harsh solvents.

Tool care: Clean with soapy water while varnish is still wet.

Add sparingly to acrylic paints, starting at approximately 10 parts paint to 1 part thinner. Maximum addition is 3 parts paint to 1 part thinner.

Open Thinner can also function as a thin-bodied retarder when used with Golden Heavy Body or Fluid Acrylics.

The Open series paints and mediums are best used in thin layers. Applications of more than 1/16 will result in: excessively long drying periods, persistently soft, higher tack feel, and translucent layers that remain cloudy. If it is necessary to apply paint in thick layers, it is recommended to use Golden Heavy Body acrylics.

Liquitex Crackle Paste can be mixed with colour to create a structurally stable crackle effect on rigid surfaces. It dries to a hard, opaque finish and maintains paint adhesion, durability and archival quality. This medium can also be used on its own and painted over once dry.

Cracking will vary depending on how thickly you apply it (the effects will be more obvious on thicker applications, but will take longer to dry)

Tips:

Do not dilute with water
Do not force dry with a fan or heater, as this may result in less or no cracking.
Do not try and slow the drying time by adding a slow drying medium, as this will affect crackling effect.
Apply paste evenly to surface with a palette knife
Let dry for at least 24 hours before painting over
When using on wood, seal with a base layer of fluid/gel medium and let dry before Crackle Paste application.

This silicone oil pouring medium helps in the production of cell-like formations in acrylic paint pours. One or two drops mixed with 30 ml of paint is enough to make cells appear. The perfect product to multiply your acrylic technique possibilities. Technique: add 1-2 drops of Cell Flow medium per 30 ml of ready to apply colour; gently mix with a palette knife or stirrer (less mixing allows for larger cells); skim the paint surface with a palette knife to take off the top layer and release the cells; do not over stroke or colours will mix and cells will be lost; once dry wipe surface before adding more paint layers or the oil will prevent the acrylic from adhering to the surface. Application ideas:

As an Extender:
-Mix with Liquitex Soft Body Artist Colours to extend volume and increase transparency, while maintaining paint viscosity.
-Mix with Liquitex Heavy Body Artist Colours to extend volume and increase transparency, while decreasing paint viscosity.

As a Fixative:
-Use as a fixative over artwork (acrylic paint, pastel, graphite, chalk, etc.) to increase gloss or shine. Mix 1 part Gloss Medium & Varnish to 1 part distilled water. Apply with an atomizer or airbush.

As a Binder / Adhesive:
-Powdered pigments or aggregates may be mixed into Liquitex Gloss Medium & Varnish, however they must be compatible with acrylics. This can be a cost effective way to make student grade soft body gloss paint.
-The archival properties of Liquitex Gloss Medium & Varnish make it ideal as a glue for collage materiels.

As a Ground:
-Use as a transparent ground for acrylic paint instead of gesso to allow substrate to be seen. To prevent substrate induced discoloration, wash cotton or linen canvas before use.

Liquitex gel allows for matte rendering of colours without modifying their viscosity. This medium increases the volume of acrylic paints.
Liquitex gel must be added to acrylic colours and retains brushstrokes. It delays the lapping time and dries more quickly than the liquid medium. It is slightly translucent after drying.

Supports : suitable for all supports.
Uses :
As a binder for making economical paint from powdered pigments.
As canvas preparation.
To extend the mix of colours.
Important information :
Do not dilute by more than 25% with water.
Added to paint at a level in excess of 50%, it can lighten colours.
