As an Extender:

As a Fixative:
-Use as a fixative over artwork (acrylic paint, pastel, graphite, chalk, etc.) to increase gloss or shine. Mix 1 part Gloss Medium & Varnish to 1 part distilled water. Apply with an atomizer or airbush.

As a Binder / Adhesive:
-Powdered pigments or aggregates may be mixed into Liquitex Gloss Medium & Varnish, however they must be compatible with acrylics. This can be a cost effective way to make student grade soft body gloss paint.
-The archival properties of Liquitex Gloss Medium & Varnish make it ideal as a glue for collage materiels.

As a Ground:
-Use as a transparent ground for acrylic paint instead of gesso to allow substrate to be seen. To prevent substrate induced discoloration, wash cotton or linen canvas before use.

Golden Clear Tar Gel is a colorless gel with extremely resinous, syrupy, stringy, and tar-like consistency. Clear Tar Gel can be used to generate fine detailed lines by "dripping" it over painting surfaces. It can be blended with acrylic paints or mediums, offering a full range of colors with which to work. The texture of the medium being similar to the consistency of honey allows for better leveling and less brush-strokes.

General Information:

To create thin lines dip a palette knife or other tool into the gel and paint mixtures then move it quickly over a surface. The line thickness can be controlled by the size of the tool and the speed with which it is moved.

In thicker layers and pours, fine lines can develop in the surface during drying. To avoid this, keep fluid applications less than 1/8” in thickness and completely level throughout the drying process.

When mixing this medium allow bubbles to rise to the surface. Generally, mixtures with Clear Tar Gel should sit for at least 24 hours to become bubble-free.

Do not mix with oils. Paint on any non-oily surface. Abrade non-absorbent surfaces for increased adhesion. Avoid freezing. Minimum film formation temperature is 48 °F/9 °C.

To thin, add water or acrylic mediums.

Note: Larger additions of acrylic paints and mediums will increasingly lower the stringy nature of Clear Tar Gel.

Liquitex high gloss varnish enhances the intensity, transparency and luminosity of colours. It protects and improves the fluidity of paint and its adherence to supports. Of medium viscosity, it becomes transparent upon drying, stays smooth and does not yellow. Important information : For interior and exterior use. The permanent varnishes are irreversible and must always be tested before being applied. The painted surface must be completely dry (between 72 hours and 2 weeks, depending on thickness) before applying the varnish. Shake the varnish before use. For a better result, shake the varnish the day before and let it sit in order to avoid the formation of air bubbles when applying. The varnish can also be mixed gently with a stick before use in order to prevent the formation of bubbles. Apply 1 to 3 light coats, instead of one single thick coat. A thick coat will take longer to dry, may run or sink in during application and may result in visible paint marks when dry. Lay the work to be varnished flat on a table. Do not dilute the varnish as it will then be more likely to produce air bubbles. Use : Can be mixed with acrylic colours to thin out the colour or to create glossy glazes. What does bio-based mean?

The resin base of a typical pro acrylic paint is made from 100% petrol-derived ingredients sourced from fossil fuels and other non-renewable substances. For bio-based products, Liquitex halved this, replacing ingredients with ones from renewable, biological sources. These come from living or once-living organisms like corn, soy, sugarcane and algae which can be regrown or replenished relatively quickly through natural or farming processes.

At Liquitex, every ingredient that has a bio-based alternative has been replaced and they’ve avoided any components or pigments derived from animals. As more bio-based ingredients become available, they’ll incorporate them.
