The cap, or nozzle, is the only interchangeable part of a spray paint can, and it entirely determines the shape and width of the spray pattern. A narrow cap produces a precise, concentrated jet suited to outlines, fine details, and small-scale lettering. A medium cap delivers an intermediate flow suited to filling mid-sized areas and blending gradients. A wide cap deposits a large amount of paint across a broad surface in a single pass, making it effective for backgrounds and large fills. Swapping caps on the same can makes it possible to adapt the tool to different phases of a piece without multiplying cans: outlining with a narrow cap, filling with a medium cap, and laying down a background with a wide cap. Replacement caps are also useful when a cap becomes clogged or worn after extended use.
