Botanical Ink Illustration (EN)

Express your love of nature! In this 1.5-hour workshop, you will learn how to create a botanical illustration using different types of inks. Artist Gabrielle Hayes will share a variety of techniques such as drawing using a graphite pencil and India ink brushwork to truly add dimension to your flower. A wonderfully therapeutic workshop for any nature lover.
 
Open to beginners and intermediates.
Ages 12 to 99.

Part 1: Material overview and sketching out a composition

In Part 1, Gabrielle will go over the necessary materials. You will then follow along as she sketches out a composition in graphite.


Part 2: Drawing using ink pens and India ink brushwork

In Part 2, you will continue with drawing over your pencil lines with ink pens. To conclude, you will explore how to create depth and contrast in your composition by filling in areas with various shades of India ink.

 

List of materials to bring:

✓ Paper (either Bristol, watercolour or mixed media; minimum size 9 x 12 in)
✓ Waterproof ink pens (Gabrielle uses a size 05 Micron)
✓ Watercolour/ink palette
✓ India ink
✓ Graphite pencil (lighter/harder lead)
✓ Eraser
✓ Paper towel
✓ Jar/container for water
✓ Watercolour brushes (round, around sizes 0 and 4)
✓ Round edge to trace a circle (minimum 6 in; Gabrielle uses an upside-down bowl)
