Summer decorative pottery

With sunny summer days, we all feel like redesigning our space by adding vibrant colours and fresh touches! Clay is a great option when it comes to creating custom decorative items. And, contrary to popular belief, it is possible to find clay that doesn’t require firing. Neat, right?! With this tutorial, we’ll be showing you how to create a centerpiece for your dining room table in refreshing pastel hues!

MATERIALS:

  • Self-hardening modeling clay PLUS
  • Cutting mat
  • DeSerres chalk paint
  • Steel ruler
  • Tape
  • Flat paintbrush
  • Scissors
  • Parchment paper
  • Rolling pin (or glass bottle)
  • Toothpick
  • Recycled toilet paper rolls
  • Dried flowers of your choice

INSTRUCTIONS:

Step 1

Prepare your workspace by placing a sheet of parchment paper on your cutting mat and securing it in place with tape.

Step 2

Cut your recycled toilet paper rolls into half-cylinders.

Step 3

Using a steel ruler, separate a portion of your clay block into a strip measuring about 4 cm thick.

Step 4

With the strip of clay you just separated from the block, form a firm ball.

Step  5

Use a rolling pin or a glass bottle to flatten the clay ball into a rectangular shape (about 0.5 cm thick).

Step 6

Use a rolling pin or a glass bottle to flatten the clay ball into a rectangular shape (about 0.5 cm thick).

Step 7

Use a toothpick to make a small hole in one end of your piece of clay.

Step 8

Gently lift your piece. Using the cardboard half-cylinders, create a curved shape to add an effect of movement to your piece. Repeat this step as many times as desired, depending on the size of your piece.

Let the clay air dry in a safe place for 48 hours and then remove the cardboard half-cylinders.

Step  9

And now, time to add some colour! We recommend our line of DeSerres chalk paint for a matte finish that pairs beautifully with dried clay.

Step 10

Insert dried flower stems into the holes you made with the toothpick. And voilà! You are ready to decorate your dining room table or your nightstand with your beautiful handmade pottery!
