Creative Practice: Abstract Collage (EN)
Learn how to make abstract collages in water-soluble media! In this three-hour workshop, special attention will be given to colour. You will explore the use of a wide range of materials: watercolour, watercolour crayons, watercolour pencils, gouache, inks, acrylic paint/markers, and oil pastels.

This workshop is highly experimental, and no prior experience is necessary – perfect for anyone looking to explore their creativity and have fun!
 
Open to beginners.
Ages 16 to 99.

Part I: Material and technique overview

To begin, Gabrielle will go over some of the workshop materials, as well as some of the techniques that can be used to make collage elements. You will also learn about the order of layering different types of media.


Part II: Arranging collage elements

In Part 2, you will begin arranging some of the collage elements created in Part 1.


Part III: Determining points of interest and fine-tuning

In Part 3, you will bring your collage composition together by emphasizing points of interest and fine-tuning details.


 

List of materials to bring:

✓ Watercolour paper (140 g, cold pressed; minimum size 9 x 12 in, plus more for collage elements)
✓ Mixed media paper for collage elements
✓ Watercolour paint to use in your composition (minimum of 2 colours, either harmonious or contrasting)
✓ Watercolour pencils and/or crayons (think about colours that are alike or harmonious to your watercolour paints)
✓ Gouache (colours that complement your other media)
✓ White glue or matte medium
✓ Watercolour brushes (assortment of sizes and types to play with)
✓ Paper towel or cloth rag
✓ Water for paint (in jar or container)
✓ Watercolour palette (clean and clear palette; white plastic takeout tray or lid will also work)
✓ Masking fluid & masking fluid applicator (old brush or colour shaper)
✓ Plastic wrap
✓ Magazine clippings for collage elements
✓ Any other art supplies you’d like to work with
