Northern Lights Gouache Landscape (EN)

Paint the enigmatic Northern Lights, a stunning natural phenomenon that blows away anyone lucky enough to catch a glimpse of it! In this 1.5-hour workshop, Gabrielle will share some pivotal painting techniques to create a breathtaking piece using gouache. While some painting experience is helpful, it is not necessary. The perfect workshop for anyone who loves celebrating nature’s mysteries.

Open to beginners and intermediates.
Ages 13 to 99.

Part 1: Material overview and background wash

In Part 1, Gabrielle will present all the necessary materials. You will then learn how to paint the background using the wet-on-wet technique. To speed up the drying time, you will use a hairdryer.


Part 2: Painting the stars and foreground

In Part 2, you will learn how to create stars using a paint splattering technique. You will then paint the trees in the foreground using a fan brush technique.

 

List of materials to bring:

✓ Cold press watercolour paper (9 x 12 in, 140 lb) *plus scraps for testing out paint colours
✓ Gouache paint: Primary Yellow, Warm Red, Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean Blue, White, Black, Bright Green (similar to the one in the reference photo) *water-soluble or acrylic-based gouache will work
✓ Watercolour paintbrushes (round brush #6, mop brush, fan brush #2)
✓ Paint palette
✓ Jar/container for water
✓ Paper towel or rag
✓ Masking tape
✓ Painting support such as a masonite board
✓ Pencil (HB or lighter)
✓ Hairdryer
