Introduction to Oil Painting (FR)

Discover the fascinating world of oil painting! In this two-hour workshop, Julie will first introduce you to the basic materials and principles of oil painting. You will then explore several techniques through various exercises and the creation of 3D shapes. The perfect workshop to learn all about oil painting—the medium that seduced some of the greatest artists in art history!

Open to beginners.
Ages 16 to 99.

Part 1: Introduction to materials and their use

To begin, Julie will explain the fundamentals of oil painting, such as the fat over lean rule and the use of oil mediums, with a focus on liquin (Winsor & Newton's alkyd medium).


Part 2: Practice exercises and 3D shapes

In part two, you will learn how to properly blend your colours, how to apply a colour glaze, as well as how to create 3D shapes—all the basic techniques to create a successful oil painting!

 

List of materials to bring:

✓ Pébéo® XL paint kit (12 x 12 ml)
✓ Canson® canvas paper pad (9 x 12 in)
✓ Odourless solvent
✓ Winsor & Newton® liquin
✓ Filbert sable paintbrush (#12)
✓ Hog's hair paintbrush (#4)
✓ Disposable palette for mixing colours (9 x 12 in)
✓ Two glass jars for storing the 250 ml of solvent (like a mason jar)
✓ Metal spatula (medium)
✓ Soap for cleaning paintbrushes
✓ Paper towel (tip: recycle an old cotton t-shirt!)
✓ Easel (optional)
✓ Masonite board (16 x 20 in; for securing your paper only if working on an easel)
✓ Masking tape to secure the paper to the board
✓ Faber-Castell® oil pencil (optional)
