Introduction to Still Life Oil Painting [3 hours]

In this introductory class, students will learn how to use oil paints with mediums, as well as colour mixing and painting techniques. Students will practice compositional development of still life forms using highlighting and shadowing techniques to create a still life oil painting on canvas.

In this experimental painting class, the instructor will introduce students to watercolour paints, water-soluble coloured pencils and painting techniques that use masking fluid, plastic wrap, salt and rubbing alcohol. The instructor will guide students through these techniques to create spectacular effects and create a series of abstract paintings on cold press watercolour paper.

In this introductory class, students will learn how to mount photographs onto wood and apply a high-gloss, archival finish using professional quality resin. Step-by-step, the instructor will guide students through photo mounting techniques and the resin application process. Students are encouraged to bring a printed photograph to personalize their project. Additional images will also be provided. In this two-day painting class, students will develop a large abstract geometric painting on canvas and participate in a group critique. During the first day, the instructor will guide students through abstract drip painting and geometric masking techniques on canvas. On the second day, students will add final details to their paintings and participate in a compositional critique to strengthen their artistic development. Advanced Drawing & Oil Painting:
Exploring Cubism [5 hours]

Saturday, January 26th 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
In this two-part drawing and painting class, students will develop a cubist-inspired still-life composition through drawing and painting practices. During the first half of the class, the instructor will introduce students to a brief history of Cubism. Students will practice the transition between observational and abstract drawing of a still-life reference. After an hour lunch break, the instructor will demonstrate oil painting techniques and guide students as they transform their drawings into cubist-style oil paintings. The skills learned in previous oil painting classes are an asset, but not required.
